Elastic insertion

Threading the elastic band through the waistband casing, securing its ends, and closing the opening.

Where it is used

Cut a strip of elastic, 1.0 cm wide and the length specified on the back lining pattern piece.

Pin the elastic tape to the seam allowance at the bottom edge of the top, spreading the gathers evenly across the entire length.

Sew the elastic tape to the seam allowance at the bottom edge of the top, gently stretching the elastic as you go.

Pre-shrink the elastic band. Thread the elastic through the waistband. Try on to determine the correct length. Join the ends of the elastic to form a loop, placing the edges together, and secure with a zigzag stitch and backstitching.
